Mark Klaassen, MD
Dr. Mark Klaassen is a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with over 30 years of experience. He specializes in total joint replacements, including total hip replacement, total knee replacement, outpatient joint replacement, and robotic assisted surgery. Throughout his career he has been a mentor to other orthopedic surgeons throughout the U.S. and other countries, providing instruction on advanced orthopedic surgical techniques and procedures. He has been and is a consultant for medical device companies assisting in product development, surgical technique development, and surgeon education. Educations has been a big part of his career being Professor of Science of the University of Notre Dame, as well as Associate Professor of orthopedic surgery at Indiana University school of Medicine. Dr. Klaassen is especially proud of his ability to make a difference in the quality of life for his patients. He participates in yearly mission trips to Central America, where he provides life-changing joint replacement surgery to underprivileged population with no access to joint replacement surgery through Operation Walk Midwest and Hope in Motion.
Dr. Klaassen, the son of missionaries, grew up in Colombia, South America where he learned early on what it meant to care for others. He grew up in the Andes Mountains in a missionary boarding school for kids from a leper colony with 40 Colombian brothers in his home. The positive impact of helping others pointed him toward a career in medicine. He returned home to the U.S. at age 15 to continue his education. He received his undergraduate degree at Goshen College and his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine at University of Notre Dame. Following medical school, Dr. Klaassen completed his orthopaedic surgery residency training at Mercy Medical Center, Denver, Colorado, Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Hospital for Sick Kids in Toronto, Canada.
Outside of orthopedics, Dr. Klaassen enjoys boating, fishing, bicycling, traveling, hiking, and water sports. Dr. Klaassen is fluent in both English and Spanish.
