Lower Extremity and Adult Reconstruction Fellowship

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Indiana University School of Medicine

Indiana University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and its affiliated hospitals are pleased to support a one-year fellowship in adult reconstructive hip and knee surgery.  The fellowship continues the legacy of founder, Dr. Bill Capello, who was a world-renowned surgeon and past president of the prestigious International and North American Hip Societies.

Scope

The Adult Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship is well rounded and encompasses nearly all aspects of lower extremity adult reconstruction including primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. The experience also includes unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, minimally invasive surgical techniques, direct anterior and posterior approaches for total hip arthroplasty, as well as computer assisted and augmented reality surgical techniques.  A particular emphasis is placed on complex revision hip and knee reconstruction, including the surgical treatment of peri-prosthetic infection.  Further, adult reconstruction techniques and learning occur in both the inpatient and outpatient setting, including the ambulatory surgery center environment.

Responsibilities

The Fellow’s responsibilities include inpatient and outpatient musculoskeletal care of the patient, with an emphasis on evidence-based decision-making.  Learning is through didactic lectures, case presentations, critical review of peer-reviewed journals, weekly indications conferences and an extensive surgical and office experience with the various faculty surgeons.  The opportunity for clinical and basic science research is offered and encouraged during the fellowship.

Instruction/Rotations

The Adult Reconstructive Surgery Fellow completes four months on each rotation (two repeated two-month rotation blocks) as follows:

  1. Indiana Joint Replacement Institute
    • Dr. Meneghini
  2. IU health Saxony Hospital / VA Hospital
    • Dr. Buller
    • Dr. Sonn
    • Independent Faculty – VA Hospital
  3. IU Methodist Hospital / VA Hospital
    • Dr. Parr
    • Independent Faculty – VA Hospital

Program

Affiliated teaching hospitals are IU Health Methodist, IU Health Saxony Hospital, Roudebush Veterans Administration Hospital, Union Health Hospital and Surgery Center of Fort Wayne.  The Fellowship is well rounded and encompasses nearly all aspects of lower extremity adult reconstruction including primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty.  Anticipated case volume per fellow is approximately 500 arthroplasty cases, with a 20% revision mix.

2022 IU Hip and Knee Fellowship Graduating Class

The fellowship currently receives external funding from an educational grant from OMEGA.  Requirements for the fellowship include completion of an accredited residency and obtaining licensure in the state of Indiana.

SF MATCH

All Fellowship match applicants must apply for open positions exclusively through the San Francisco Match.  The Adult and reconstructive hip and knee fellowship match is sponsored by the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), the Hip Society (HS) and the Knee Society (KS).  Registration and the match is administered by the San Francisco Matching Program (SF Match).  It is designed to be a transparent, unbiased process in which applicants and programs are matched.  The Match takes place in April a year prior to active start date and after the application and interview process has ended and confidential rank lists are sent to the SF Match.  To register for the SF Match, go to the website www.sfmatch.org and click on the “Login/Register” button.  Requirements for the SF Match are completion of an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. Non-refundable registration fee and additional fees for applications you request be sent to the programs and that cost varies with number of applications.  You can find more information regarding fees on the SF Match website.

GME

The Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) provides administrative services for all GME residency and fellowship programs of Indiana University School of Medicine.  It also serves as the human resources office for residents and fellows, delivering services in payroll, health and dental insurance, disability, and life insurance, liability insurance, federal and state taxes, parking, loan deferments, verification of appointment and training and other GME support services.   GME offers mandatory online orientation and training programs.  The Med Hub system is used as an integrated web-based suite of modules which was developed to improve communication, information workflow, and reporting for physician training.

Conferences and Meetings

The fellow must attend two courses during their fellowship.  The annual American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons meeting held in Dallas, Texas and the ICJR Revision Hip and Knee Course held in June at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  Fellows are encouraged and allowed to attend other education and professional growth courses during the year including the hip and knee fellow course in Vail, CO, the ICJR Vail Course and others pending faculty approval.  There are weekly conferences to attend each Wednesday and Friday, in addition to the annual Garceau-Wray Lectureship, which represents the education conference for resident and fellow graduation.  Attendance at monthly Journal Clubs is expected.  The fellow is required to present a research project of high quality methodology and data analysis with subsequent submission to a peer-reviewed journal for publication.

Evaluation Process

Fellows are evaluated after each surgical rotation based on surgical judgment, skill and knowledge.  They are given one-on-one in person communication at the end of each rotation, in addition to weekly feedback in the didactic lectures.  The fellows are also given feedback on their ability to synthesize data in peer-reviewed publications in the monthly journal club.
