Revision Hip, Knee and Shoulder Replacement

Revision Hip and Knee Replacement

When a hip, knee or shoulder replacement starts to fail, causing pain and/or instability, it can be challenging to find a surgical practice with experience in complex revision surgeries.

The Indiana Joint Replacement Institute is led by Dr. R. Michael Meneghini, a nationally renowned total joint surgeon who has over 17 years of surgical experience and participates in orthopaedic research to improve surgical techniques and improve outcomes for patients. He received fellowship training in complex hip and knee replacement at the Mayo Clinic, and continues to research the causes of joint loosening, instability, and infections, and the best ways to treat them. The board certified hip, knee and shoulder replacement surgeons at the Indiana Joint Replacement Institute do more revision surgeries than any practice in Indiana.

If you would like to schedule a consultation with a member of the Indiana Joint Replacement Institute team, please call 317-620-0232 or book an appointment online.

We’re Here to Help

If you’ve got a problem with your hip, knee or shoulder replacement, we’re here to help you. Our dedicated team will follow you through your entire experience ─ from evaluation, to surgery, through recovery. We treat everyone the same way we would treat our own family, taking the time to explain the causes of total hip and knee replacement issues and the approach we will take to resolve them.

The Indiana Joint Replacement Institute has more expertise in revision hip and knee replacement surgery than any practice in the state.

  • We will always take care of patients who may not have anywhere else to go, regardless of gender, culture, or insurance status.
  • We welcome complex cases as a way of giving back to our community.

Warning Signs that a Revision May be Needed

  • Pain or instability soon after a hip, knee or shoulder replacement may be caused by infection or improper placement.
  • Polyethylene (plastic) implant components can wear out over time and may need to be replaced.
  • Implants can loosen over the years as bone cement breaks down.
  • Soft tissue injuries, and traumatic injuries involving broken bones, may impact joint replacements.

Getting to the Root of the Problem

The Indiana Joint Replacement Institute goes through a rigorous process to determine what is causing hip, knee or shoulder pain following joint replacement.

This may include:

  • Ordering infection labs
  • Reviewing records of the original surgery to find out what implants were used
  • Doing advanced imaging and diagnostic testing to determine the source of the problem

Recovering from Revision Hip, Knee and Shoulder Surgery

Every revision surgery is different, depending on the condition of soft tissue and bone, and other medical conditions.

  • Patients who may have had instability from the beginning tend to recover faster now that they have a good, stable joint.
  • Patients with infections, or other long-term issues, may take longer to recover depending on the nature and complexity of the revision.

Seek Expert Counsel

It’s important to talk to an experienced surgeon, who is comfortable doing complex procedures, about the risks, benefits, and potential outcomes of revision surgery. If pain, discomfort, or lack of motion following hip or knee replacement is greatly affecting your quality of life, a revision may be the best course of action.

Revision Hip, Knee and Shoulder Replacement in Indiana

Indiana Joint Replacement Institute surgeons, led by Dr. R. Michael Meneghini, have extensive experience in revision hip, knee, and shoulder replacements, and will continue to research the causes and solutions for hip, knee and shoulder failures so we can treat any situation that arises.

We have more experience and expertise than most other programs in the state and serve as a referral for the most complex revision procedures in the state. We are committed to helping all patients regardless of color, gender, or insurance status. Our hip, knee and shoulder replacement team includes specially trained medical support specialists who assess and follow a patient’s progress from evaluation to procedure, discharge and recovery.

All of our surgeons, who are board certified and fellowship trained in hip and knee replacement and board certified in shoulder replacement, value character, integrity, and perspective as much as technical skill, and we are committed to treating each patient as if they are a member of our own family.
